A partial solar eclipse will occur over Southern California between about 5:30 PM and
sunset on Sunday. The eclipse will peak around 6:40 PM, when between 75 and 80 percent of
the sun will be obscured by the moon, depending on your location. Patchy low clouds may
block the view of the eclipse at the beaches, but inland coastal areas all the way to the
deserts will be clear. Like always, you should not look directly at the sun without
propery eye protection, such as eclipse viewing glasses. Regular sunglasses are not
sufficient! You can also observe the eclipse by looking at shadows - either through a
homemade pinhole projector (simply make a small hole in a piece of paper or aluminum foil
and hold it a few feet above a light colored surface) or underneath a leafy tree.
